A packet is a tiny bundle of computer code. Information is transmitted through the Internet as packets.

When you connect to a server on the Internet, your computer sends packets to the server to make a connection, and then the server sends packets of code back to your computer to give you the information you're looking for.

Your computer needs a web browser to act as a translator for all those little packets of computer code. Your web browser assembles the packets into the text, picture, song, video, etc. that you downloaded from the server.
